A 9 day Day Skipper Combined theory practical combined sailing course from Plymouth. Fastrack option £835 all in price. Dates October and November with Start Point Sailing, Plymouth

This follow on option is a brilliant way not only to use just one week of your precious holiday allowance but also a way to reinforce the theory learned straight away, following your 4 days in the classroom.

We have a number of dates in October and November.  Please check our dates or give us a call to discuss your specific requirements.  Own boat tuition practical is £240 per day up to 3 persons.

Theory can also be split over two consecutive weekends, and the practical over two or three weekends (total 5 days required).

  • We offer a dedicated classroom facility at Plymouth Yachthaven Marina.
  • Our two marina base is joined by a short ferry hop from Sutton Harbour to Mountbatten.
  • Accommodation on board our school yacht during the shorebased (subject to availability), local B and B and AirBnB also available locally.
  • Free and discounted parking at Plymouth Yachthaven.

There are good road links or a short ferry ride across the Cattwater joins our two centres. A separate ferry to Mountbatten is available for students attending the shorebased course from Mayflower marina.

The basis of our courses is one of student focus. We aim to improve your skills through a process of practical teaching methods, informal and formal assessment, feedback with loads of time for you to practice new skills within a fun, safe and challenging environment under the guidance of your instructor.

At successful completion of the course you will be awarded the RYA Day Skipper Practical and Shorebased certificates and qualify to apply for the International Certificate of Competence which will enable you to Charter Yachts abroad.

Course detail

Theory

The basis of our course is student focus with lots of hands on practice navigating and completing
exercises using the charts. Classroom navigation includes position fixing, estimating position, course to steer, and calculating height of tide plus all the essentials of coastal navigation, pilotage, meteorology and electronic navigation.

Practical

Get the chance to put your theory into practice and reinforce what you have already learned in a practical environment under the guidance of your qualified and experienced RYA Instructor. Our planned training itinerary takes in the delights of Plymouth Sound, Tamar, Salcombe and Fowey allowing students to gain strong skills in our challenging environment. Topics include boat handling under power and sail, sail theory, pilotage methods and passage planning, mooring and anchoring skills
