This course is the VHF DSC Marine Radio Short Range Operators course.  The course is a  pre-requisite to you sitting for your SRC radio license (which you can do through us).  If you plan to use the VHF radio, You are legally required to have an operator’s license.

  • a hard copy or online copy of the VHF Radio Handbook by Melanie Bartlett and the SRC Exam Eligibility form.

  • This course is the minimum qualification needed to legally operate a VHF radio on a UK flagged vessel.  It is an internationally recognized course, including the most up to date VHF radio and GMDSS associated information and the latest MCA Marine radio Distress relay protocol updates.

The on-line course is a prerequisite for taking your VHF SRC radio license.

Once you have successfully completed the online course you will be issued with a completion number which gives you the authorisation to attend the exam at our centre or a centre near to your physical location for your license assessment (£70.00).

VHF-SRC Radio online course

This course is the updated VHF Marine Radio SRC online course with Start Point Sailing and RYA Interactive Platform.

It is a prerequisite course to taking the VHF license, which is the minimum qualification required for you to operate a Marine Radio legally.  It includes the latest updates in Distress Relay protocol.

At course completion, participants will be issued an online pass certificate.  This SRC VHF Radio Operator’s course is suitable for all marine users, boat owners and those chartering abroad.

The VHF Marine Radio SRC license course will take between 4 – 8 hours and includes a number of interactive scenarios and radio practice via a computer-simulated radio programme which you can downloaded onto your computer. 

Once you have downloaded your course completion number you will be able to book for your assessment if you require a license.  Give us a call with your preferred dates.

All new VHF sets are either fitted or can be interfaced, with DSC allowing calls to specific vessels. If you hold the ‘old’ VHF license (pre-1999) you need to upgrade your qualification if you purchase new equipment.

The course format has changed in order to bring licensing in line with those offered in Europe. The new course will be delivered by a qualified radio instructor or taken via the RYA interactive online programme. Following the completion of the course, a separate assessment will now be carried out by an RYA radio assessor who will test your working knowledge of the radio on radio simulators as part of a practical assessment.   You will also be examined by a short written test including writing a Mayday message and testing your knowledge of the GMDSS system, phonetics and procedure.

Once you have successfully completed the online course you will be issued with a completion number which gives you the authorisation to attend the exam at our centre or a centre near to your physical location for your license assessment (£60.00).

Once we have your payment then we will register your details on the RYA interactive site and sent out your VHF Radio coursebook. You can also make use of your remote tutor who will be available via our email or on 01752 21 31 21

Course Syllabus

An on-line course for anyone who owns or uses a fixed or hand-held marine VHF radio.

One person on board needs a VHF Radio license in order to stay legal.  Other users should be able to competently use the radio.
