Format:  2 weekends.

This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages. It allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.

Prices include course books, charts and course packs (as required), hire of Portland plotters.  Purchase portland plotter and divider sets for £21.50.

Course topics include:

Chart projections, symbols, corrections and datum
Latitude and longitude, position fixing, position lines
Direction, compass variation and deviation.
IRPCS Tide causes, springs and neaps, tide tables
Tidal heights, standard & secondary ports, high and low water curves
Tidal streams, diamonds, atlas, computation of rates
Navigation: DR, EP, leeway, CTS, ETA, ETD and ETE
Pilotage: IALA buoyage, leading and clearing lines, lighthouses, sectored lights, dipping distances
Meteorology: weather forecasting, highs and lows, passage of a frontal depression, synoptic charts, fog, sea breeze and local effects

Passage planning and the role of the skipper

Prerequisite of taking this course: All students should be able to work up an estimated position taking into account tidal offset and drift and leeway, and be able to calculate a course to steer prior to the course.

The Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shore based has 3 assessment papers, a navigational paper, IRPCS and weather. This is the advanced course in navigation and meteorology.

Some revision of the Day Skipper course will take place during the YM course but students should have previously acquired the knowledge set out in the Day Skipper course in order to assimilate all the subject covered in this advanced course in the available time.

The basis of the course will be the RYA syllabus, and will lead to, on successful completion, the award of a shore based qualification certificate.
