THE YACHTMASTER PREPARATION

Aim: To assess the students ability and prepare for the final Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore DoT MCA examination held at the end of the course aboard the school yacht.

The approach of the Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore preparation course is to brush up on your areas of weakness.  As such our approach does not follow a formal training frame other than covering the exam syllabus.  We can tailor-make time to meet your specific needs and helps to fill any gaps in your knowledge that may become apparent.

Your preparation time will concentrate on areas including passage planning, pilotage, practice close quarters boat handling under sail and power and Coll Regs.  Candidates will be set navigation and pilotage tasks which will take place during the day and night with your experienced instructor on hand to improve and strengthen knowledge.

Coastal and Yachtmaster Candidates need to arrive with the required pre-requisites to taking the Yachtmaster exam.  Coastal Yachtmaster candidates need to have taken the Coastal Skipper Course and the Yachtmaster shorebased course.  Yachtmaster Offshore candidates should have a wide breadth of experience in unfamiliar waters and experience of longer passages and managing crew and setting watches.  Go to Product Description below for detail of pre-requisite passages and Yachtmaster Exam detail.

Certification: Following assessment by a RYA/DoT examiner, successful candidates will obtain qualification of RYA/DoT Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Coastal.  Taking the DoT exam at the end of the course is optional although we ask if all students taking part in the course stay to support the other crew members taking the exam.
